Appraisals
We do appraisals on books, maps, ephemera, and autographs primarily for
insurance purposes or donations. We generally charge an hourly rate, covering
examination, research, travel, and preparation of the written appraisal. We do
not appraise everything, but feel comfortable with materials similar to
those for sale on our web site, particularly in American history and literature.
We have done many appraisals for college and private libraries, as well as
private collections and estates.
We also only appraise materials that we personally examine. Condition is an
important factor in determining value, and we really only feel comfortable
assigning values to books and items that we have checked carefully. Thus we
cannot responsibly respond to inquiries concerning the values of old books;
however, if you bring something by our shop we will be happy to look it over and
determine - without assigning a dollar value - whether it is a potentially
valuable book or one of the many good but common ones.
We have done appraisals for many estates and donations to
various institutions, including the Grace Hudowalski Adirondack Collection that
was auctioned by the Adirondack 46ers, special collections and donations to
Union College and Fulton-Montgomery Community College, and the entire collection
of the Adirondack Research Library of the Association for the Protection of the
