Benson, Frank Weston (1862-1951). Artist; known as an early American Impressionist, and
in later years turned his interests to waterfowl and sporting scenes. ALS,
1+ pp., Salem, March 25, 1940. To "Mr. Jackson" concerning an inquiry about "Torrey,"
who is undoubtedly Charles Torrey (1851-1921), a Salem area marine artist. Near

AS-03. AS-04. Boughton, George Henry (1833-1905). Landscape and genre
painter. Born in England, but grew up in Albany, NY; opened his
first studio in 1952, and exhibited in New York and Washington; opened a studio
in London in 1861. Well known on both continents, and his work appears in many
museums. Signed receipt, 3 1/4" x 7 5/8", Albany, April 12, 1858, in the
amount of $15.00 for Miss Annie Scott for one quarter's tuition in oil painting
at the Albany Female Academy. Very good. $75.00 AS-05. Brown, David Paul (1795-1872). Playwright, orator. A
neat, attractive signature on a slip of paper. 2"x 5.25". Fine. $30.00

Contralto; one of the first American singers to acquire an international

ALS, 1 p., Pokeepsie, NY, July 7, 1911. COmmenting on the weather: "My
dear Whittle: I enclose the declaration concerning the proofs... The heat
here has been nearly prostrating, so far as working on my block went,.....It did
not prevent me however from working on the farm as early as 430 a.m. and again
in the evening - five miles there and back and two or three hours digging. I
tried it in the middle of the day but it was worse than slavery,..." A

Actress. Signed card. Also signed on the verso by Joanne Dorian (b.
1942). Very good. $25.00 AS-13. Jewett, Henry
(1861 - 1930), actor and manager. The Australian -born performer came to America
in 1891 and shortly was leading man to Julia Marlowe, Fanny Davenport, and other
noted actresses. He also played second leads opposite Richard Mansfield. At the
turn of the century he moved to Boston where he established the Henry Jewett
Players (also known as the Repertory Theatre), a company that soon gained
national recognition for the excellence of its repertory and acting. Signed

Composer: "She Wore a Wreath of Rose," "Rocked in the Cradle of the Deep," etc.
ALS, 1 p., Suffolk, March 3, 1882. Concerning a melody he had written for
someone else's lyrics that turned out to be not entirely original. In part:
"Musical publishers are always very particular with regard to exclusive rights
as to the words,... I feel sure it would be of little use trying to sell the
copyright. I had sketched out the melody for the song & regret the contretemps.
If at any time you should have any original words by you that you do not wish to
submit to any particular composers I should be glad to be favored with a sight
of them..." Light reside on the back probably caused by glue from an autograph

AS-19. Libbey, J. Aldrich. Turn-of-the-Century Popular Ballad Singer.
Recorded "After the Ball," by Charles K. Harris, which was considered one of the
first examples of "Payola" when he was paid $500.00 and a share of the royalties
to perform the song. Signed card, 2"x3". Fine. $35.00

director, and actor; born in Waterford, NY; teamed with Russell Crouse
and was noted for work on Anything Goes, State of the Union,
Life with Father, and The Sound of Music among other movies and shows;
married Dorothy Stickney. Birth name was Herman Nelke. Signed file card with
a note to Larry Bershon: "Sorry! - but I make it a rule never to give my
autograph." Short tear and minor soiling; very good. $30.00
AS-23. Prout, Samuel
(1783-1852). English landscape and architectural watercolor artist. AL,
2 ½ pp., Aug. 25, 1844. "Mr. Prout respectfully begs to acknowledge the favor
of Miss Richardson's polite note, also to offer his best thanks for the honor
of selecting one of his small drawings from the watercolor exhibition
especially as Miss Richardson has been pleased to sacrifice a portion of the
ten pound prize - the price of the drawing being 8 guineas, and the remaining
1.12 being claimed by the Atheneum. (New paragraph) Mr. Prout regrets that he
cannot at present state the price of the frame - which he will be most happy
to send with the drawing - not recollecting which it is, but as he hopes to be
in town at the end of the week, he takes the liberty of deferring the answer
for a few days." Unsigned, and written in the third person, but the
handwriting appears the same as our signed letter. Near fine. $60.00
AS-24. Prout, Samuel (1783-1852). English landscape and
architectural watercolor artist. ALS, 1 p., no date. To Mr. Oldfield: "I
have this moment discovered - or rather my sagacious first -born that my
engagement at Earl Defrey's is for Friday and not today - as I had blunder'd -
so that perhaps you will permit my having the pleasure of joining your
delightful party after dinner this evening." Signed at the end. Very good.

Emma Cecilia (1845-1931). Singer. Born in Brooklyn, New York, 21
February, 1857. She had her first instruction of Julius Meyer, and
subsequently studied with Achille Errani and Erminia Rudersdorff. In 1873 she
went to Italy, where she studied for a short time under Francesco Lamperti and
San Giovanni. On her return she sang in the Broad way tabernacle, New York. In
1876 she made her first concert-tour with Patrick S. Gilmore's orchestra, and
in 1877 she traveled with Theodore Thomas. In the same year Maurice Strakosch
signed a six-years' engagement with her, and under his management she made
several tours in the United States and in Europe, meeting with great success.
Miss Thursby has appeared only in concert and oratorio, and has rejected the
most flattering offers that were made her while abroad to appear in opera. Her
forte is sacred music, and' in rendering the soprano parts of Handel's and
Haydn's oratorios she is unexcelled. Card signed with her full name.
