HD-3.  THE ALLIGATOR. Twenty line handwritten poem. NP: Unsigned page from a writing book, dated Jan. 4, 1831. Commemorating the wreck of the U.S. Schooner Alligator, designed by William Doughty, built in 1820, and commissioned in 1821. It made two trips to the west coast of Africa to capture slavers and search for land for the American Colonization Society. The ship went ot the West Indies in 1822, and on Nov. 9th battled with pirates, resulting in the loss of the commander, Capt. W.H. Allen. On Nov. 18th, the ship ran aground off the coast of Florida; unable to save it, the crew burned the ship to keep it from pirates. It lies in shallow water and is frequently visited by divers today. The verso contains another poem, "To the Dead," dated the following day. Original or copy? Our research has not encountered any other reference to the poem. Neatly written and very good. $200.00
