John Evelyn. ACETARIA: A DISCOURSE OF SALLETS. Dallas: Still Point Press, 1985. First illustrated limited edition, 149 pp., no. 20/300. $275.00

Designed and produced by Henry Morris at the Bird & Bull Press. Introduction by Kit Currie. Illustrated by Tottoroto. Bound in quarter leather and paste-paper boards by Gray Parrot. A fine reprint of the first book in English on salads, originally published in 1699. Prospectus laid in. Near fine.

THE ALLIGATOR. Twenty line handwritten poem. NP: Jan. 4, 1833. Unsigned, written on a page from a writing book, 9 3/4" x 12 1/2". $200.00

Commemorating the wreck of U.S. Schooner Alligator. Designed by William Doughty, built in 1820, and commissioned in 1821, it made two trips to the west coast of Africa to capture slavers and search for land for the American Colonization Society. In 1822, the ship went to the West Indies, and on Nov. 9th engaged pirates in a battle resulting in the loss of the commander, Captain W.H. Allen. On Nov. 18th, the ship ran aground off the coast of Florida; unable to save it, the crew burned the ship to keep it from pirates. It is frequently visited by divers today. The verso contains another poem, "To the Dead," dated the following day.

William P. Van Ness (1778-1826). Jurist; protege of Aaron Burr & his second in the duel. ALS to James Vanderpoel, Sept. 17, 1825. $175.00

An interesting letter concerning a land matter, with a curious postscript: "Be kind enough to tear off what I have written on this page and send it to candle."

Verplanck Colvin. REPORT OF THE SUPERINTENDENT OF THE STATE LAND SURVEY... FOR THE YEAR 1898. Schenectady: AfPA, 1989. $70.00

Edited and with an introduction by Norman J. Van Valkenburgh. Limited edition, 334 pp., green cloth, tipped-in maps and plates, with additional illustrations. The excellent introduction discusses Colvin's place in Adirondack history. NEW. Originally sold for $100.00. we have acquired a couple copies to sell at a special reduced price, making this the perfect time to add this title to your Colvin collection.

British Naval Ordinance Document, H.M.S. Venus. Signed by Charles Frederick and H(enry) S(eymour) Conway, military officer and M.O.P. $350.00

DS, for William Prato, gunner on the ship, for payment of expenses fo Gunner's stores from July 27, 1768 to July 31, 1769. A clean and attractive document, 12 1/4" x 7 3/4", tipped into a larger (11"x15") sheet, a common practice in older autograph collections. Includes a portrait of Conway on a separate sheet.

Bill Healy (ed.) & O.S. Phelps. THE HIGH PEAKS OF ESSEX: THE ADIRONDACK MOUNTAINS OF ORSON SCHOFIELD PHELPS. New. $12.50

Second printing, published by Purple Mountain Press in 1999. "Old Mountain" Phelps was a Keene Valley guide to Seneca Ray Stoddard, Verplanck Colvin, Charles dudley Warner, and others; he cut thefirst trail to the summit of Mt. Marcy, guided the first women to the top, and named several peaks. This is his story of the Adirondacks, taken from a lost manuscript never published in entirety until this edition. An important historical document.

Winslow C. Watson. THE MILITARY AND CIVIL HISTORY OF THE COUNTY OF ESSEX, NEW YORK. Albany: J. Munsell, 1969. 1st edition. $300.00

A cornerstone of every Adirondack library. Plum 685. 504 pp., green cloth. This copy has a signed inscription from Augustus C. Hand, to whom Watson dedicated the book, to his two sisters. A bit worn, but good-very good.

Helen Keller (1880-1968). Lecturer and author. Signed card. $200.00

Losing both sight and hearing due to illness at the age of 19th months, she was educated by Anne Sullivan, and led a productive life as a lecturer, activist, and author.

Christopher Weiman. Large Marbled Flower with a Clear Background. 12"x 9", six colors on a clear background. Near fine. $300.00

Weiman was a noted maker and authority on marbled paper, and made a few to prove his theories of their making.

Designed by James and Carolyn Robertson, printed in letterpress and bound at the Schuberth Bindery. Afterword by Herbert Gold, illustrations by Bill Prochnow, and signed by both. A very special edition.

An important early survey of North American mammals; about half the third volume is devoted to the practice of whaling. Illustrated with numerous engraved plates. All three volumes have been repaired or reback on the spines, making a nice set. Very good.

Reprint of the 1903 edition, produced by Capt. Henry Galpin of the Civil War Roundtable. Includes a list of all officers and enlisted men.

Dorothy Wilding. Signed photographic portrait, "Spring Meeting" . London, nd. Portrait of Gladys Cooper of the North Shore Players. $100. 00

Wilding was a noted portrait photographer, who alter took a portrait of Queen Elizabeth used on a British stamp. Gladys Cooper later became a movie star in America. Signed in the lower left corner. Near fine.
