LA-201.  Savage, Richard Henry (1846-1903). Author; My Official Wife, etc. ALS, 4 pp., The Rockingham, Apr. 26, 1893. To "Cousin Bessie," concerning personal matters, mainly various illnesses among family and friends, and not speaking of his writing. Nevertheless, a nice letter due to his attractive and legible handwriting. Near fine. $30.00

LA-202.  Saxe, John G.  Poet, editor of the Burlington Sentinel 1850-1856. Three handwritten letters, various dates and subjects: ALS, 1 p., from the steamer Francis Dallas, May 27, 1849, to "Stansbury," concerning a visit to Burlington; ALS on a post card, New York, nd, concerning lectures, and a short ALS, Albany, Nov. 17, 1862. All very good.  $150.00

LA-203.  Scott-James, Rolfe Arnold.  Military officer, journalist, author, letter writer. ALS, two ful pages, Aug. 17, 1839. To the Saturday Review of Literature, suggesting an article on the subject of Best-sellers. Also suggests his fee. Neatly written. Very good.  $70.00

LA-204.  Shaw, Henry Wheeler (1818-1885). Humorist; used the pen name "Josh Billings."  Signed card. $35.00

LA-206.  Shea, John Gilmary (1824-1892). Roman Catholic historian, editor; founded the United States Catholic Historical Society. ALS, 1+ pp., Elizabeth, NJ, Dec. 8, 1886. To "My dear General,"  and declining to be associated with a project. In part: "Had I been consulted at the outset of this project I would have been happy to take part.... but when one volume is complete, and I have seen work on it confided to unskilled hands, ignorant of the bibliography of the subject, who grabbed at any thing of mine to glean out matter, using studies of thirty years ago to with those of the present, I could not well allow my name to be associated with it". Clearly written. A short tear at the top of the page, else near fine. $125.00

LA-207.  Sheehan, Vincent (b.1899). American foreign correspondent and author; Personal History, Between the Thunder and the Sun, etc. ALS, 1 p., New York, January, 8th, nd. Concerning signing copies of his books. Boldly written. Tipped to another sheet. Very good. $30.00

LA-209. Sparks, Jared  (1789-1866)  Educator, biographer, author; wrote a biography of Washington, edited the writings of Washington, B. Franklin, etc. Clipped signature from a letter to T. L. Cuyler, tipped to another sheet. Very good.  $45.00

LA-210. Stewart, Dugald (1753-1828). Scottish Philosopher. ALS, 1 p., Catrine, 23 August, (nd). To Rev. Alison; a friendly letter concerning an upcoming visit. A neat letter, but the porous nature of the paper has resulted in some ink spreading and show-through. Stewart was a prominent philosopher and mathematician, and the author of many books. Very good. $175.00

LA-212.  Stoddard, Richard Henry (1825-1903). Poet, critic, editor, author: Foot-Prints, etc. Signature on a slip of paper, New York, April 24, 1882. Near fine. $20.00

LA-213.  Street, Julian (1879-1947). Author. ALS, 4 pp., Norfolk, Ct., June 29, 1922. A friendly letter about his book American Adventures: "...coming out just when people would read nothing but war books, never got a good start. It is a better book than its predecessor, but sold, and sells, only about half as well."  He also praises Robert W. Chambers: "I wish, for instance, that I could think I had even written anything as delightfully humorous as 'Iole'..."A fine, friendly letter. $90.00

LA-214.  Swinton, John. Journalist. Born in Scotland, emigrated to Canada, where he trained as a printer, a trade he eventually practiced in New York. Traveled the U.S., returning to New York in 1857 to study medicine. Contributed articles to the Times and eventually became managing editor, and later of the Sun, and finally to his own weekly journal ("John Swinton’s Paper"). Active in the labor reform movement. ALS, 1 p., NY, Feb. 1, 1897, accepting an invitation. Boldly written. Very good. $50.00

LA-217.  Thomas, Frederick William (1806-1866)  Editor, novelist.  ALS, 1 p., 1840, to Wm Campbell. Recommending Wm. Brewster, and sending him to a concert in his place. Very good.  $40.00

LA-218.    Thomas, Lowell.  Correspondent, adventurer. Bold signature on a slip of paper. Near fine.  $20.00

LA-219.  Thomson, Charles West  (1798-1879).  Poet.  Fourteen lines from his poem "American Eagle." To T. L. Cuyler, undated.  Near fine.  $95.00

LA-220. Thorburn, Grant (1773-1863). Merchant, author; wrote "Laurie Todd" and also used it as a pen name, published the first seed catalog (The Gentleman and Gardener's Kalendar, 1812) printed in America. ALS, 1 p., Albany, May 21, 1835. To Dr. Sprague, complying with a request for an autograph. A neat note. Near fine. $50.00

LA-222.  Townsend, George Alfred (1841-1914). Journalist, novelist; wrote for the Chicago Tribune and the Cincinnati Enquirer under the pen name "Garth."  Eight lines of verse on a sheet of paper, signed and dated March 22, 1897. In part: :The horse who spends his life in shafts, The men of simple handicrafts..." Very good.   SOLD

LA-224.  Trowbridge, John Townsend (1827-1916). American writer; author of the "Jack Hazard" series and Darius Green and His Flying Machine. Poet and editor. AQS, Arlington, MA, 1880. "Around this lovely valley rises the purple hills of Paradise."   Near fine.    $45.00

LA-225.  True, James Preston (1859-1933). Author of children’s books; editor at Houghton Mifflin 1879-1919. ALS, 1 ½ pp. Boston, July 24th, 1912. A response to an autograph request: "Bless you, my lad, - your request for an autograph takes me back a small lifetime to the days when two of us schoolboys tramped out to Cambridge & called on Longfellow with that same end in view!..." A nice response to the request. Very good. $65.00

LA-226. Tupper, Martin Farquhar (1810-1889). English versifier, best known for his Proverbial Philosophy.  Eight lines of handwritten verse, signed and dated in Baltimore, April 3, 1851. Apparently a patriotic piece:

"But, while patriots still are steering,

Undismayed by men or things,

And Religion's Cherub cheering

on the topmast sits & sings,

Then an Eden, not an Edom

Truly shall thy name be read, 

And Columbia's Ship of Freedom

Safely Pass the "rocks ahead."

LA-227.  Tyler, Royall (1757-1826). American jurist and author. Served on the staff of Gen. Benjamin Lincoln during Shay's Rebellion (1786); was chief justice of the Vermont Supreme Court (1807-1813), and professor of jurisprudence at the U. of Vermont (1811-1814). Wrote a novel and also the first professionally produced comedy by a native-born author (The Contrast, 1787). DS, Woodstock, August 24, 1805. A legal agreement, signed as a judge of the Vermont Supreme Court, along with two other judges. A few brown spots, but a remarkably nice document. Very good. $225.00

LA-228.  Wagner, Henry R. (1862-?) Bibliographer, collector of western Americana, and author. TLS, 1 p., Feb. 26, 1942. Reply to a request for a photograph" "...I beg to advise you that I have not had one taken in forty years, except snapshots, which would hardy be appropriate in your gallery." Also mentions that his Reminiscences will soon be published. Near fine. $25.00

LA-229.  Walpole, Hugh (1884-1941). English novelist. ALS, 2 pp., Aug. 1, 1922. Concerning an upcoming visit to the United States, and matters of engagements. Fine. $45.00

LA-230.  Ward, Mary Augusta (1851-1920). English novelist; better known as Mrs. Humphrey Ward. Unsigned page of manuscript from her autobiographical entry in Men and Women of the Times. Previously glued to another sheet; from an early autograph collection. Very good. $50.00

LA-231.  Wells, Carolyn.  Poet, novelist, parodist. Last page of a letter, admitting to a mistake and offering a correction. Some soiling; very good.   $20.00

LA-232.   Whipple, Edwin Percy (1819-1886). Critic and essayist. ALS, 2 pp., Boston, April 1,1878. To Mr. Silsbee:" Will you give me the exact words of Butler’s remark to Choate, at the Lowell Union Meeting, when he found the supports of the Hall had given way?" Clarifying a point in Prof. Brown’s biography of Choate. Notes that "Butler saved more lives by his presence of mind, on that occasion, than he ever killed in his battles." Very good. $95.00

LA-233.  Whipple, Edwin Percy (1819-1886). Critic and essayist. ALS, 2 pp., Boston, Dec. 26, 1863. To George William Childs, about writing for the American Publisher’s Circular ("it would give me great pleasure..."), which Childs founded, and other matters. Very good. $90.00

LA-234.  White, Richard Grant (1821-1885). Editor, philologist, author; founder and editor of Yankee Doodle. ALS, 1 p., May 21, 1855. To Howard Putnam, conveying a page of the manuscript of his book Shakespeare's Scholar (page not present).  "Though it has the soil of the printing office upon it, it may answer your purpose."  Near fine. $50.00

LA-236.  Whitney, Adeline Dutton Train (1824-1906). Writer, chiefly of books for girls. Clipped signature from a letter. Very good.  $30.00

LA-237.  Widdemer, Margaret. American poet and novelist. Typed copy of her poem The Watcher, signed at the bottom. A couple small chips and tears at the edges. Very good. $40.00

LA-238.  Wilcox, Ella Wheeler  (1850-1919).  Poet; best known for the poem "Solitude," with the line "Laugh, and the world laughs with you."  Short ALS, Short Beach, CT, nd.  "Have 70 unanswered letters on my desk..." Very good.  $50.00

LA-239.    Yates, Edmund H. (1831-1894). English journalist and novelist. ALS, 1 p., July 1, 1880. A short note conveying an autograph, and expressing "a warm regard for your countrymen, from whom I have received the warmest kinship and hospitality."  Near fine. $30.00

LA-240.  Yates, Edmund (1831-1894). English journalist and novelist. Brief note on a small piece of stationery: "...I will have it looked after at once." Near fine. $22.50
