pp.) and August 6, 1846, both to Henry C. Murphy, and both concerning DeWitt
Clinton’s Memoir on the Antiquities of the Western Parts of the State of New
York. Adams contends that some material is taken from his manuscript, in the
first letter, he claims he cannot check on the matter because he has just moved
and his books "are all in a heap...if I have left it among my pamphlets at my
house, it will be a hopeless task to attempt to find it." By the second letter,
he has found it, and notes that his work is cited. Both letters are neat and

divulge the real name, for the reason that having some very popular books, we do
not care to have the Eastern publishers try to seduce himfrom the part of
virtue and our interests." Written on company stationery, with ads on the back.

Journalist, traveler, publicist, author; at various times a special envoy to Central and South America, the Vatican, and the Court of Spain; born in Akron, Ohio, and died of apoplexy in Philadelphia. Short signed sentiment; tipped to another sheet in an old autograph collection. Very good. $30.00
LA-71. Dalzell, (Private) James M. (1838-1924) "The Blue and the Gray - Revised 1917" Manuscript poem, 3 pp., Washington, DC, May 30, 1917. Three 8"x13" lined sheets. "Private Dalzell" was a prolific writer, orator, and champion of the Civil War soldier, perhaps best known for organizing reunions of veterans, holding the first in Caldwell, Ohio, in 1873. This revision of his original 1864 poem consists of eight stanzas written on three pages, signed at the end with the note: "Copied in my own hand from the published poem in my 80th year." Apparently revised to be given at a Memorial Day event, with some additional references to the conflict at the time (WWI). Neatly written and well preserved, with only a couple small chips along the edges. $500.00
LA-72. Dana, Richard Henry
(1787-1879) Poet, editor, and essayist; helped found the North
American Review in 1815. ALS, Dec. 4, 1863. A little difficult to read:
"Pardon this scrawl - my brain is most confusedly muddy" appears as a
postscript. Apparently feeling the signs of age ("I hope to regain strength
rapidly..."), he writes of missing the recipient;s visit: "...it seems that you
failed of your engagement, so, I lost the pleasure of taking you over our beach
& rocks, and thro' the woods.-" Very good. $85.00 LA-73. Davis, Elmer (b. 1890). Author (History of
the New York Times, etc), radio commentator. TLS, 1 p., NY, May 17, 1939. To
"George," a note accompanying two brief essays (not present): "Too literary, maybe; my only
hope is that you will feel that it has enough relevance to our time to be worth

librarian, author (many papers on Yale). ALS, 3 pp., Yale College, Sept. 30,
1886. To Dwight King, concerning his inquiry on an early attempt to establish a
Professorship of French at Yale. "So far as I know, no public notice was ever
taken of this supposed offer. The records... contain no allusion to it... I
have, however, reason to know - from private manuscripts in possession of the
college... that Mr. Silas Deane made inquiries, in 1778..." A lengthy,

Monroe (1842-1924). Poet, Diplomat. Autograph on a printed
page with concluding lines of a poem "The Greatest Miracle," written for the
Second Book of the Authors Club in 1921. Tipped to another sheet. The lower
right corner has a rectangle with glue residue where a biographical entry once
resided. Very good. $25.00
LA-77. Dole, Nathan Haskell (1852-1935). Poet; translator of
Tolstoi, Daudet, etc.; editor of the Young Folks Library, Bartlett’s Familiar
Quotations (10th ed.). Two handwritten notes on cards to
Mr. Young. One dated Dec. 3, 1900, mentioning that he is in New York, connected
with Appletons. In part: " Is Richard LeGallienne really with you? Or is that
figuratively spoken? If he is with you in the flesh tell him I want to
see him..." A second note is dated Dec. 22, sent from Jamaica Plain, MA,
where he is spending the winter. Says that he is uncertain of his future and
does not expect to get to New York, so it would be better for Young to "run over
to Boston." Both notes tipped to another sheet with a hinge, and in fine
