Swinton, John (1829-1901). Journalist. Born in Scotland, emigrated to Canada, where he trained as a printer, a trade he eventually practiced in New York. Traveled the U.S., returning to New York in 1857 to study medicine. Contributed articles to the Times and eventually became managing editor, and later of the Sun, and finally to his own weekly journal ("John Swinton’s Paper"). Active in the labor reform movement. ALS, 1 p., NY, Feb. 1, 1897, accepting an invitation. Boldly written. 6" x 9.5". Very good.
